Ahh, we couldn’t leave Australia off the list could we?

Ningaloo Reef is just beautiful. Situated off the west coast of Australia, Ningaloo Reef is a great unspoiled location for diving. Well known for it’s brilliant colorful coral, diving with manta rays, and a prime location for whale spotting!

What’s more, you’ll escape the crowds of the Great Barrier Reef over on the east coast. Not only that, but, to be honest, we actually think it’s a lot better than the GBR!

There’s a real abundance of things to see and do under the water at Coral Bay, definitely not a place to be missed when visiting Australia!

What To Look For In Scuba Diving Facilities

With the increased popularity of extreme sports such as scuba diving, there’s been an abundance of facilities popping up offering you the diving experience of a lifetime.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt, it’s that they’re not all created equal! Let’s take a look at some of the important factors to consider when looking for scuba facilities near you.

Equipment

The quality and state of the gear should be one of the first things you take into consideration when choosing a scuba school or dive company. Your own safety is paramount, after all, and it’s the equipment that’s going to be keeping you safe below the surface.

Be sure to have a look around at the quality of the equipment and the state it’s in. Is it excessively worn to the point there are tears and broken zips? Probably not a great facility!

Not only that, but pay attention to how the equipment is stored. If a scuba facility can’t keep their equipment well maintained, it doesn’t bode well for the rest of the experience!

Vessels

This isn’t such an important factor if you’re not fussy and just looking to get your feet wet. However, if you’re looking for a bucket-list adventure and a best-in-class experience, it’s worth looking more into the vessels on offer.

I’m not even really talking about the comfort and luxury of the boat, besides, we want to be spending our time below the surface, don’t we!

The reason I mention this as a factor is some vessels and companies have exclusive rights to some charters and dive sites, so if you’re looking to dive in a particular spot, be sure to see who can offer you that.

Dive Sites

The next thing to consider is the actually sites that the company dives at, tying in with my last point about exclusive rights.

This is obviously important because you want to have the best and most enjoyable experience, but you should also consider factors such as safety and the level of skill required for specific sites.

Be aware of the typical conditions and visibility of the area you’re diving in, as well as how beginner friendly it is.

Expertise

Be sure to dive deeper into the knowledge of your instructors/guides. Find out how long they’ve been operating, how long they’ve been diving for and their level of qualification.

If you’re looking for lessons or working towards your certification, you want to find the best instructors possible. This goes not only for the practical side, but all of the theory you need to know too.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, you want to go with the company that has the most passion and experience diving in those spots, that’ll maximize how much you enjoy your time under the water, as well as the whole experience.

Be sure to interact and engage with people within the facility, gauge how friendly and approachable they are and get a feel for their knowledge, experience, and passion.

Safety Record

This one really goes without saying!

Scuba diving will always inherently be a dangerous activity and an extreme sport. Saying that though, most dive schools and tour operators pride themselves on their safety record.

It shouldn’t be too hard to find safe and reputable scuba facilities near you, in this day and age, a subpar safety policy isn’t tolerated and you can be sure these companies won’t be in business very long!

Level of Training

If you’re looking to take specialty courses in order to get qualified for certain professions such as underwater welding or rescue diving, you’re going to want to make sure that your local scuba diving schools are able to offer you such a course.

Not all schools are able to teach the vast array of different courses and certifications, particularly the specialty PADI ones, so it’s always a good idea to check.

You can usually do this quickly by checking their website or giving them a call.

Price

The final factor on our list is the price. Frankly, it’s the last consideration on the list for a reason.

It’s important you consider all of the other factors above before you focus too much on the price. At the end of the day, the facilities with the best equipment, vessels and rights to the best charters are going to cost more.

You need to ask yourself though, are you looking for the best experience and diving education possible? If you’re doing it anyway, is there really any point skimping on any of these factors? You might never get the chance to do it again!

Overall, look over these factors and decide what’s most important to you and your scuba diving goals. Be sure to vet multiple facilities near you and see how they meet your criteria before factoring in the price.

You want to get the best bang for your buck, but you don’t want to compromise your diving experience!
